Telehealth

What is telehealth?

Telehealth is a virtual way to receive health care services. Through the use of technology (e.g., computer, laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc.) and the internet, you can see your provider even when you are not able to go into the clinic. Telehealth services can be offered via two-way video or just via telephone.

  • If you don’t have access to the internet or a data plan, consider going to a public location that offers free wifi. Often times, you can access the service in the parking lot so you can keep your conversations with your provider confidential.

  • Xfinity is offering free wifi hotspots throughout their service areas. Click here to find a hotspot closest to you.

Your visit will be the same as it would be in the clinic, but you will be talking to your provider through a device rather than in person.

Why should I receive services via telehealth?

Telehealth allows you to obtain health care services from anywhere you can access a device (e.g., computer, laptop, smartphone, tablet) and the internet. This means that you will not have to spend time traveling to the clinic.

*Throughout the pandemic, many health centers have started offering their services via telehealth to decrease the risk of COVID-19 spread to patients and staff. Certain types of visits may only be available via telehealth. Call your health center to find out.

Is telehealth private and secure?

Yes! Health centers have taken extra steps to ensure that the telehealth platform that they use meets strict privacy and security regulatory requirements. If you are concerned about privacy, ask your health center about how they have ensured their telehealth visits are safe.

*During COVID, there have been some flexibilities regarding privacy and security standards to allow for the use of telephone, FaceTime, Google, and other platforms to ensure that everyone is able to receive the services they need regardless of their access to technology. These platforms are not as secure as others. If you want to be sure your health center only uses the the most private and secure platforms for your visit, let them know when you schedule your visit.

How can I make the most of my telehealth visit?

Here is a list of tips that will allow you to make the most of your telehealth visit:

  • Make sure you are sitting in a quiet area free from background noise and distractions as much as possible.

  • Make sure you have a strong internet/wifi connection. If the connection is not strong and the provider has a hard time hearing you, you may be asked to reschedule.

  • If required by your health center, download the telehealth platform prior to the visit to make sure that you will be able to log in without issue on the day of your visit.

  • Make sure the device you plan to use has a working camera and microphone.

  • Come prepared with questions and concerns. It can be helpful to write them down on a piece of paper.
